are cd's better than Vinyl ? Tell me the TRUTH ?
Sure , CD's are more convinent. But the real question is this : Which has better sound ? I heard Vinyl sounds warmer. No sure if the rumors are true.
CD - Pros :
- Hold up to 30 songs on one disc
- no flipping sides
- you can pause , skip forward and backwards
- No needle is needed. A laser reads the CD.
- You can take them wherever you go (in the car , etc)
- Take less space
- Clear sound (no background noise)
CD - Cons :
- CD's get scratched. CD may freeze or skip on purpose.
- Laser rot (Nothing last forever)
Vinyl - Pros :
- Warmer sound (?)
- They're cool (old school)
- Cool art work (Record cover)
- Man made (and still is)
Vinyl - Cons :
- The 45s are easy to break
- Background noise (Pops , etc)
- Take more space than CDs
- Can't play them in your car
- You need to buy needles for your turntable
- You can't skip tracks or pause
- You have to flip sides
Vinyl sounds warmer because it has less pernicious distortion in the time domain. Vinyl has more distortion in the frequency response, but that doesn't matter too much because distortion in the frequency response is more benign. Anyway, your average loudspeaker or headphones will blow any advantage in frequency response out of the water. I could "distort" the frequency response at a live performance just by moving 2m to my left!
Frequency response is just something that marketing departments like to use as a selling point - to the detriment of other areas!
