Hot water from the bath and shower (mixer tap) is at a trickle?
Hi there
We have had a leak for ages under the bath and yesterday a plumber came in to do the leak, change a radiator in the bathroom, sort out a leaking cold water bathroom basin tap, and plumb in a new toilet. My eldest had his usual shower this morning but when my youngest went in straight after the hot water was cold and a trickle. The plumber was here 4 hours trying to sort it out. When he took the mixer tap off the hot water was still a trickle. When you turn the bath hot on and try and run the hot basin tap, the basin tap stops running. He has changed the washers, changed the pipe again but now says to buy a new mixer tap. As the hot water is still flowing slowly when the mixer tap is removed I don't think a new mixer will cure this. Any ideas? We have checked the boiler and the pressure plus all the 'screws' underneath are ok.
It's a little difficult to second guess a good plumber, however all plumbers are not good plumbers. I would guess that when he shut down the water to do the repairs, the built up scale and lime in the piping and the boiler scaled off into the pipes.
This is common as when air hits this buildup up scale/lime it often falls off of the insides of the pipes.
Probably at one of the shut-off valves or and elbow is where this buildup has blocked the pipes. I would try flushing the lines by opening up an outside hydrant and let it flow into a 5 gallon bucket. As you do this have someone go inside the basement and tap on these pipes close to the shut off valves or 90 degree turns in the pipe. Watch the bucket and see if you find pcs. of debris at the bottom of the bucket.
You can also remove the aerator fittings on vanity and kitchen faucets and open both hot and cold with drain plugged. See if you see debris in bottom of sinks. Also check to see if he re-opened the water valve shut off all the way. You can't shut off the water unless you know how to shut down the boiler safely.
If you know how to operate the boiler system. Shut it off , shut water off, find the boiler drain valve and open it up and then slowly turn water on and watch for debris coming out of drain valve. I bet you have a lot of scale/lime deposits that broke loose from disturbing the piping - and now it is clogging either the hot water feed to your fixtures or it has stuck itself in a 90 degree elbow somewhere in the line.
